MTMasnik RBernero BGordon WRussell Per your request, we are providing information for your response to questions posed to you in a June 7,1985 letter (enclosed) addressed to you from fir. Lawrence Evers.

The processing, handling and shipment for disposal of radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants are the responsibilities of the utility licensees The NRC, therefore, does not receive or evaluate contract propor )r these waste management activities. We do, however, review the u. 's planned activities pertaining to the operating license to assure s , protection of public health and safety.

In the specific case of the cleanup of Three 1111e Island Unit 2, the licensee, General Public Utilities Nuclear Corporation (GPUNC), is responsible for cleanup planning and the conduct of cleanup operations, including the management of generated radioactive waste. It is GPUN's responsibility to evaluate contract bids and proposals for these recovery activities. The NRC's responsibility is to assure that the cleanup proceeds safely and expeditiously for the protection of public health and safety. We review GPUNC's proposed cleanup actions and we ensure that those approved activities are safely implemented.
