available PRAs in FY83, the objectives of the continuation of this project are:
: a. to improve on the methodology developed in FY82 in order to establish a more direct link between the importance ranking of cut sets and systems unavailability and assess the contribution.to overall frequency of core melt;
: b. to utilize the closely related methodology developed to assess .the effect of uncertainties in the data used in PRAs on the overall o                              frequency of core melt for 4 PWR PRAs; and I                        c. to review operational experience (Precursor Study) in the area of l                              multiple dependent failures, assess the impact on system unavailabilities and formulate a method with which to identify dependent failures in risk assessment procedures.

Estimated Level of Effort:                2 staff months Estimated Completion Date:                7/31/83 Task 8:    Data Uncertainties - Effects on PRA Results Utilize the methodology developed as part of the RES sponsored program, "Research Methodology Integration and Evaluation Program", based on the methodology previously developed to determine importance ranking of systems and components as part of this project which will assess the effect of uncertainties in data on thtpverall probability of core melt for 4 PRAs of PWRs.
Estimated Level of Effort:                3 staff months        .
Estimated Completion Date:                10/30/8,3 Task 9:    Review of Operational Data for Multiple Dep' indent Failure Events We recognize that credibility of PRA studies depends largely on the way multiple failures are treated.      PRA analysis teams are encouraged to review operation experience in this area. Such review is necessary to assure that the analysis models will withstand compcrison with reality.
Several NRC programs include analysis and evaluation of experiential data. Among these programs is the ORNL Accident Soquence Precursor Program. The objective of this task is to identify and summarize relevant multiple dependent failure information fer use by PRA anlaysis teams and PRA studies reviewers.
From the Precursor Program (and any other operational data sources that are identified as' appropriate and useful):
1)'- Identify multiple dependent failures.
: 2)    Identify the applicability of these failures to plants or systems (it may be appropriate to classify them) and evaluate the applicability to each class.

2. Revise Period of Performance to read as follows:

Starting Date 10/1/81' Comp 1etion Date 12/31/83

3. Revise Objective to read as follows:

The : objective of-this project is to identify and rank event sequences, systems components, and failure modes according to their contribution

_ _.. to_ the_overalLfrequency-of-core melt and to some measure (s) of risk., '

In addition to.the importance ranking of sequences, systems and -

components performed on the PRAs available in FY82 and on newly.

available PRAs in FY83, the objectives of the continuation of this project are:

a. to improve on the methodology developed in FY82 in order to establish a more direct link between the importance ranking of cut sets and systems unavailability and assess the contribution.to overall frequency of core melt;
b. to utilize the closely related methodology developed to assess .the effect of uncertainties in the data used in PRAs on the overall o frequency of core melt for 4 PWR PRAs; and I c. to review operational experience (Precursor Study) in the area of l multiple dependent failures, assess the impact on system unavailabilities and formulate a method with which to identify dependent failures in risk assessment procedures.

' 4. Add to Work Requirements:

, Task-7: Alternative Method for Systems Importance Ranking l

L Review of the draft report " Determination of Event Sequences

!' Contributing to Overall Frequency of Core Melt / Risk Study Insights" L resulted in the identification of several areas that may impact the methodology and results presented in the report. Of primary l 1 ,

.importance to this. program is a clear and valid basis for importance ranking of safety-related systems in the plant. SNL should select a

~

PRA which includes information suitable for identification of system minimal cut sets. The use of this information in combination with the

- basic event importances in-the stated draft report may make it g possible to establish importances of vr.rious front line systems and l

I support systems in the plant. This new ranking should be used to validate the systems importance ranking in the report or serve to restructure the methodology to incorporate a more useful measure for

~

systems importance.

2) Identify the applicability of these failures to plants or systems (it may be appropriate to classify them) and evaluate the applicability to each class.

- ~ " ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ^

' gpf gpg 3-

3) Discuss if the PRAs assessed under this contract considered such dependent failures and provide a description of how such failures
could be incorporated in the applicable plant PRAs. Briefly discuss the potential impact on the PRA results if the applicable dependent failures were to be included in the PRA.

Estimated Level of Effort 2 staff months Estimated Completion Date 12/15/83

5. ' Revise Level of Effort and Period of Performance:

'The level of effort is estimated at 17.4 staff months over a 21 month

. period.

6. Add.to Meetings and Travel: ,-
