SUBJECT:

LLNL DRAFT PROPOSAL FOR PROBABILISTIC ASSESSMENT OF

?

THE SEISMIC HAZARD FOR EUS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SITES (FINA0448) 9 As you know Dr. Dae Chung of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)visitedtheNRCofficesonOctober 20, 1983. Part of the discussion involved the tasks and sub-tasks that LLNL will complete as part of the Probabilistic Assessment cf the Seismic Hazard for EUS Nuclear Power Plant sites. Although the NRC has yet to officially send out a request for a proposal, LLNL has given us a draft proposal dated .

October 13, 1983. Within this draft LLNL has suggested useful modifications to what we will be sending them in the statement of work.

The modifications that we concurred upon are listed below and they will also appear in the final proposal.

1. Task 2 - the overall computations will not be initiated until feedback questionnaire data, compiled as part of the Seismic Hazard Characterization Program (RES FIN A0390; NRR Fin A0428) has been included in seismicity files.
2. As a result of number 1 above, subtask 3.1 can be eliminated.

Ll 3. Subtasks 3.2 and 4, dealing with comparisons with USGS i probabilistic map and historic hazard computations will be

! completed on 20 sites, not all sites. The NRC will choose these 20

!! sites.

i:

l 4 The original Task 6 will be eliminated because it is not clear, at this time, what this task will involve, particularly financially.

j This task was to develop alternative forms of seismic input, such as event specific spectra. While work in this area would possibly

. be beneficial in the future, it is not worthwhile at this time.

. Harold Lefevre requested that Task 6 now become a travel task so

, that all travel can be kept track of. LLNL agreed and will provide the words in the final proposal. ,_ ,

! The above modifications make the program more efficlent and eliminate potential budget problems that LLNL has stated in the cover letter i accompanying the October 13, 1983 draft proposal. LLNL's revised proposal will meet the overall budget of the program of $360K in FY 84 and $120K in FY85. .
