5000 GALLON LEAK IN RADWASTE BUILDING About 6 a.m. (CST), October 31, 1988, the licensee discovered that approximately 5000 gallons of liquid radwaste had leaked through a failed seal on a radwaste evaporator heat exchanger in the Radwaste Building. A floor drain near the evaporator was plugged, allowing the liquid to accumulate in the room where the heat exchanger was located. About 10 gallons of the liquid from the room seeped through a crack in the wall, dripping onto a concrete pad on the outside of the Radwaste Building and then into a drain pit.-

Th2 licensee has drained the water out of the radwaste room and is decontaninating the affected areas, including the outside drain pit. The 10 gallons which leaked through the wall were isolated; no releases from the plant protected area occurred.

There were no injuries or personnel contamination. No radioactive material was released to the environment.

Region III (Chicago) dispatched a radiation specialist to the scene. He reviewed the licensee's radiation survey information, verified that no liquid entered the stonn sewer, and that proper radiological controls were in place. Region III will continue to monitor the licensee's course of action. >

Tha State of Illinois will be notified. The licensee has issued a news release.  ;
