Subject:

REACTOR SCRAM

' At S:39 p.m. (CST) on March 9,1988, Unit 2 scrammed from 85 percent power as a result of a technician's error while performing surveillance testing on Reactor Core Isolation Cooling 4

instrumentation. The technician opened a wrong valve in the instrument system which led to a series of events including the tripping of the reactor recirculation pumps and a pertur-j bation in the feedwater heaters. As a result cooler feedwater was pumped into the reactor, i causing reactor power level to go up. The power surge triggered the scram, i

i i Following the scram all systems functioned as expected. The licensee elected to place the '

unit in cold shutdown for about five days for various maintenance activities.

The State of Illinois will be notified, i

4 i -The reactor scram was reported to the Headquarters Operation Center at 6:32 p.m. on March 9, ,

1988, and the Operations Center subsequently notified Region III (Chicago). This '

information is current as of 9 a.m., March 10, 1988.
