Facility: Commonwealth Edison Company Licensee Emergency Classification LaSalle Unit 2 Notificatio'n of an Unusual Event Marseilles, IL 61341 Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergt.ncy XX Not Applicable Docket No: 50374

Subject:

PIPE BREAK; 150,000 GALLONS LOST FROM CONDENSATE STORAGE TANK The Unit has been in cold shutdown since February 28, 1985, for equipment replacement and surveillance testing. At about 2 a.m. (CDT), May 27, 1985, security personnel noticed water bubbli~ng out of the ground near a Condensate Storage Tank. The water was running into a nearby culvert, which empties into the plant's cooling lake.

The licensee investigated and determined that about 150,000 of the tank's 350,000 gallon capacity had leaked out of a broken pipe 20 feet bslow the ground. The leak was halted when personnel closed a valve, isolating the tank.

The broken pipe is on a High Pressure Core Spray Line, which was being used to recirculate and agitate water in the tank prior to sampling the water for its radioactive content.

The licensee's sample of the ground water tnd the water inside the condensate storage tank showed that its radioactive content was less than regulatory limits (maximum permissible concentration) for release to an unrestricted area. Region III (Chicago) has dispatched an inspector to the site to take confirmatory measurements.

The Senior Resident Inspector also is on the site following the licensee's course of action.

The State of Illinois will be notified.

Th2 S:nior Resident Inspector was first notified of this event at about.3 a.m.,

(CDT),May 27, 1985. This information is current as of 11 a.m. (CDT), May 28, 1985.
