Palisades Nuclear Power Plant Notification of an Unusual Event Covert, MI 49043 Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No. 50-255 General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

OIL LEAK IN COOLANT PUM."

On the afternoon of July 9,1987, a reduction in power commenced due to a handswitch failure on the "B" cooling tower pump discharge valve. Subsequently at 1:00 a.m., July 10, 1987, l operators identified decreasing oil pressure in one of two primary coolant pumps. Operators further reduced reactor power from 75 percent to 14 percent, but the oil loss continued.

The unit was manually scrammed at 1:21 a.m. All systems functioned as designed except for two secondary plant problems. The unit remains in hot shutdown.

The oil leak was located on the discharge line of the AC backstop oil pump. The leakage may have been caused by pump vibration. The licensee is continuing its investigation. Repairs are being planned. The unit will remain shutdown for more than 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
.

The secondary problems involved the failure of a main feed pump trip and *.hrottle valve (high pressure valve) to fully close and the failure of the recirc valve on the same feed pump to open.

Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action. !

The State of Michigan will be notified. I Region III first learned of this event about 1:00 a.m. (CDT), July 10, 1987. This information is current as of 1:00 p.m. (CDT), July 10, 1987 NW LL V l l CONTACT: R. Ka ar B. Burg j FTS G88-5540 FTS 388-5689 '
