PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--
PNS-78-14 I
l This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically i
all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
Facility:
Consumers Power Company Palisades Nuclear Generating Station (DN 50-255) Covert, MI
Subject:
THREATENING TELEPHONE CALLS At 9:07 (EST) on April 1, 1978, a telephone call was received and recorded by the Sheriff's Office, Van Buren County, Michigan from a male who stated, "You better watch the Palisades Plant.
People are going to cause problems there tonight." The Sheriff's Office notified the Palisades Plant and the State Police, South Haven Barracks of the threat.
Additional guards were brought in to supplement the 10-man shift on duty.
At 10:02 p.m. another telephone call was received in the plant Control Room from a young male caller who stated, " Stay out of the Switchyard tonight." The Switchyard is not within the protected area.
Two addi-tional guards were posted in the Switchyard area. The incident is being viewed by site management as a hoax.
There have been no media inquiries and no press release is planned.
It could no-be determined if both calls were instigated by the same person.
The I AT was notified.
