a Subjcet CRACK INDICATIONS IN STEAM GENERATOR TUDES - UPDATE E s

The licensee has essentially completed eddy-current examination of ail tubes in bo h steam g;nerators using a new high sensitivity probe with continued identification of crack indications The nature of these indications has not yet been fully defined. <

u Westinghouse, the steam generator supplier, has been contracted by the licensee to remove ab ut 25 steam generator tubes or tube specimens for Laboratory anal'y' sis to9etermine the characteristics and causes of the crack indications. In a meeting between the licensee and Westinghouse on November 16, 1983, the preliminary schedule was developed for the steam g2nerator tube sork, extending the current refueling outage until April 1984. Tube removal is to begin December 5,1983, and last about one month. Following evaluation of the test data and development of the corrective actions, plugging of the af fected tubes is expected to

  • occur in February 1984 with startup and testing activities to take place in March 1984. I R; fueling activities are also underway. Other outage activities include repairs to the low-

['N j jary coolant pump.osure turbine rotor, which are more extensive than anticipated, and possible repair of a keelter (3 inches by 6 inches and weighing 3 pounds)The licensee discovered a broken portion of in the bottom of the reactor v- tel, cnd the coolant pumps are being inspected to determine the source of the piece.

RGgion III (Chicago) and the resident inspectors are monitoring the licensee's actions. The Of thafice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation has been informed of the steam generator findings by licensee.

Neither the licensee nor Region III plans to issue a news announcement at this time.

The State of Michigan will be notified.

The resident inspector was informed of the new schedule information at 12:30 p.m., CST, November 16, 1983. This,.information is current as of that time. .!
