Covert, MI 49043 XX Notification of an Unusual Eve Alert License No. 50-255 Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

Subject:

LAKE WATER THREATENS PLANT SITE The licensee declared an unusual event at 10:30 a.m. (CST), December 2,1985, because of pot:ntial flooding of the plant site. (The unit is in cold shutdown for refueling.)

One hundred and fifty feet of security fencing on the northwest perimeter of the plant has been lost because of erosion by wind and wave action. Wind gusts between 45 and 55 knots are driving waves onto the site (the lake level is higher than normal).

The licensee has requested off-site contractor assistance in hauling gravel to stem further erosiog There also is potential for erosion affecting the primary water make-up tanks (tanksT-90andT-91). Because of current inventories in the tanks, any release of tank contents is considered of minimal significance.

One of the unit's two diesel generators is out of service for maintenance.

Regicn III (Chicago) has placed its Incident Response Center on standby, and is c;ntinuing its monitoring of the licensee's activities. The residents from D. ~C. Cook (backup site) are also on standby and will provide augmented coverage.

The State of Michigan will be notified.

Region III was first notified of the unusual event at 10:46 a.m. (CST), December 2, 1985.

This information is current as of 3 p.,m. (CST), December 2, 1985.
