Subject:

FIRE IN MAIN CONDENSER At about 2:15 a.m. (EDT), July 9, 1987, with the unit in cold shutdown for maintenance, smoke from a smoldering fire in the main condenser was observed. Five workmen who we e inside the condenser at the time of the fire complained of scratchy throats from smoke i inhalation. They were taken to Lake County Hospital East for treatment. One workman vias admitted after complaining of chest pains. The others were released.

1 The licensee determined that the smoke emanated from smoldering piping insulation inside the  !

condenser. No other damage was observed. The cause of the fire is unknown. The licensee is continuing its investigation.

The plant fire brigade responded to the fire. All combustion material was extinguished by 2:52 a.m. (EDT). There was no release of radioactivity. Health physics surveys also determined that there was no radioactive contamination in the condenser.

Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action. There has been some news media interest.

The State of Ohio will be notified.
