Subject:

STEAM LEAK FROM STEAM DRAIN LINE At 6:17 p.m. (EDT) on April 13, 1987, reactor operators manually scrammed the unit from 3 percent power because of a steam leak from a drain line in the condenser bay in the turbine building. The leak was from a 3-inch drain line which was severed from a 24-inch drain line manifold when a weld failed. The cause of the weld failure is being investigated by the licensee. (There have been previous instances of weld failures in attachments to the drain line manifold.) All systems functioned properly during the scram.

There were no injuries. The turbine building was evacuated as a precaution. Air samples show:d low levels of airborne radioactivity (principally short-lived isotopes). There was n p:rsonnel contamination.

The resident inspectors are monitoring the licensee's evaluation of the pipe failure. Repair activities, which may involve design modifications, are expected to take about a week.

Th2 State of Ohio will be notified.

The licensee notified the Headquarters Duty Officer of this event at 8:35 p.m. on April 13, 1987. This information is current as of 9 a.m., April 14, 1987.
