is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Subject:

INVESTIGATION OF ALLEGATIONS CONCERNING SECURITY PROGRAM As a result of allegations made by a former VEPC0 employee, Region II (Atlanta) conducted an investigation of the Security program at Surry during the latter part of May,1977. Subsequent interviews produced nine allegations of which seven were substantiated during the investi-gation. The investigation disclosed some items of noncompliance involving failure to conduct random personnel searches, failure to search incoming handcarried packages adequately, failure to secure vital area doors, and discrepancies concerning guard qualifications.

Region II discussed these findings with site personnel during the exit interview on May 26, 1977, and by telephone with a VEPC0 Senior Vice b, President on May 27, 1977. Assurances were received that prompt correc-tive actions would be taken. There has been no media interest to date.

No press releases are planned.

This PN is being issued to advise the Commission in view of the North Anna hearings scheduled for the week of May 31, 1977.
