SUBJECT:

PACKAGED WEAPON UNDETECTED BY X-RAY SEARCH Virginia . Power has informed Region II that, at 11:30 a.m.- (EST) yesterday, a packaged, unloaded mini-14 rifle -- which was being returned to the -security section after repairs --

passed undetected through X-ray search at the access portal into the protected area.

Security personnel discovered what had happened after the package was delivered to the s:curity section and opened.

Region II plans to send a security inspector to the site on February 10 to review the circumstances of this incident and the licensee's investigation.

Virginia Power is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

Tha Information Assessment Team and the Commonwealth of Virginia have been notified.

Virginia Power informed the NRC headquarters duty officer of_ this occurrence at 4:15 p.m.
