FACILITY: Virginia Electric and. Power Company Surry, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-280 Surry County, Virginia

SUBJECT:

I STEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAK A shutdown was initiated at 9:40 p.m. on December 11 due to an apparent steam generator tube leak of 19.2 gallons per hour (gph); the regulatory limit is 18 gph. A portion of the reactor coolant system will be drained and the steam generators tested to identify the leaking tube (s) and failure mechanism. The affected tubes will be plugged. Estimated duration of the shutdown is 20 days.  !

re The facility was scheduled to be shut down on December 20 for steam

• generator tube inspection. The planned inspection of the three steam generators will be performed during this outage. Unit 1 steam generator tube replacement is scheduled to commence in January,1979.

Media interest is not expected. The Commonwealth of Virginia -has been notified. The licensee plans to issue a news release; the HRC does not '

plan to issue a news releas'e.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspe: tor at 9:00 a.m. on December 12.
