REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING JET PUMP RISER CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD INSPECTIONS AT VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION (TAC NO. MA1641)

Dear Mr. Reid:

By letter dated May 4,1998, you provided the results of the jet pump riser circumferential weld inspections conduc'ed during the 1998 refueling outage._ in order to complete our review of the weld inspection the following additional information is requested.

- Z factor calcula't ion (Page 3 of Attachment 2)- Please provide the value of the Z factor for SAW welds that was used in the analysis. If you have used an altamative formula for the Z factor, acceptance by the NRC staff will be considered as a long-term issue. The staff notes that it appears that 24" should be used for the "OD" as specified in the ASME Code, and the analysis revised as necessary.

- Loading and load combinations (Page 3 of Attachment 2) - Attachment 2 only listed loading and load combinations that were not considered. Please confirm that, except for the loading and load combinations stated in Attachment 2, all other loading and load combinations listed in BWRVIP-41 have been considered.

-- Measurement uncertainty (Page 5 of Attachment 2)- Please explain how the NDE uncertainty was established.

- Crack growth evaluation (Page 5 of Attachment 2)-Instead of providing the allowable crack size due to flow induced vibration (FIV), please provide the estimated fatigue crack growth due to FIV at the end of the next fuel cycle to be added to the " adjusted flaw sizes".
