REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING GENERIC LETTER 96-06 PROGRAM AT VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION (TAC NO. M96880)

Dear Mr. Maret:

l Generic Letter 96-06, " Assurance of Equipment Operability'and Containment Integrity During Design-Basis Accident Conditions," dated September 30,1996, included a request for licensees to evaluato cooling water systems that serve containment air coolers to assure that they are not vulnerable to waterhammer and two-phase flow conditions. By letter dated October 30,1998, you provided a response to our July 10,1998, request for additional information (RAl) on this issue for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station. You indicated that the waterhammer 11ssue would be resolved by modifying the reactor building closed cooling water (RBCCW) system during the fall 1999 refueling cutage, but details of the modification were not yet available. We understand that details of the modification should be available soon.

in order to complete our review of the your resolution of this issue, we request that you provide a more complete response to questions 6,7, and 11 of our RAI by July 31,1999. This date was. agreed to by Mr. Jeff Meyer of your staff on February 25,1999.
