JET PUMP RISER CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD INSPECTIONS AT VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION (TAC NO. MA1681)

Dear Mr. Maret. i l

By letter dated May 4,1998, you provided the results of the jet pump riser circumferential weld inspections conducted during the 1998 refueling outage. Additionalinformation was provided by letter dated July 30,1998. Ultrasonic inspections identified a flaw indication in four of the l RS-1 (thermal sleeve to riser elbow) welds and your evaluation concluded that jet pump riser integrity and performance are not compromised.

We have completed our review of the weld inspection information that you provided and concluded that the flaw evaluation meets the rules of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code. Since the predicted flaw size at the end of one fuel cycle is less than the critical flaw size with an adequate margin, we agree with your assessment that Vermont Yankee can be operated without repair for one fuel cycle. We understand that you plan to reinspect these flaws during the next refueling outage and to further evaluate the flaws at that time.
