.DIABLO CANYOU TRIP REPORT ~
Introduction On December 9, 1983, ccmmissioner Gilinsky, accompanied by Professor Milton Plesset, James Joosten and I, toured the Diablo Canyon facility.
After an orientation meeting with John _ Martin (Director, NRC Region V), Marvin Mendenca (NRC Senior Resident Inspector), and Mark Padovan (NRC Resident Inspector), the NRC group arrived at the plant site at about 9:15 a.m.
There it was joined for the tour by James Schuyler (PG&E), John Hoch (PG&E), John McCall (Bechtel),
Nancy Culver (Joint Intervenors), and Sandy Silver (Joint Intervenors).
Plant Tour Commissioner Gilinsky's group toured the following areas of the plant, looking in particular at the seismic modifications:
(1)
Diesel generator rooms (3)
Turbine building (4)
Switch gear room (5)
Control room (G)
Fuel Handling Building (7)
Unit 1 Containment Building (8)
Cable Spreading Room (9)
Post Accident Sampling Room During the tour, Mr. McCall pointed out the various beams, plates and supports which have been added to the building, explaining the process by which decisions had been made about what modifications were necessary.
He noted that during the past two and half years, some 4,000 to 5,000 workmen have been involved in making these modifications.
In the control room, we discussed the operation of the automatic seismic scram feature.
The trip point is set at ;
l 0.35 g.
