MEMORANDUM FOR:

FROM:

L. S. Rubenstein, Assistant Director for Core and Plant Systems, DSI

SUBJECT:

DIABLO CANYON UNIT 1, MODIFICATIONS TO VITAL 120 VAC INVERTERS AND ASSOCIATED BUSSES (TAC 51636)

Plant Name:

Diablo Canyon Unit 1 Docket No: 50-275 Licensing Stage: OR Responsible Branch: LB 3 Project Managers:

B. Buckley/J. Wilson /H. Schierling PSB Reviewer:

J. Knox Requested Completion Date: September 9,1983 Review Status: Complete In response to a Division of Licensing Work Request prepared by B. Buckley, the Power Systems Branch, DSI, has reviewed, as follows, the licensee's proposed modification, justification, and associated technical specification change.

By letter dated December 29, 1982 and draft letter dated September 7,1983, the licensee proposed a change to their Technical Specification to address the installation of two new vital AC busses with their associated inverters.

The proposed change increases the capacity of the Class 1E instrument AC system from 30 to 45 KVA, and was necessitated to accommodate loads associated with TMI (NUREG-0737) requirements.

Based on justification and analysis presented by the licensee, the staff concludes that the proposed modification and associated technical specification change, meets the requirements of Criteria 17 and 18 of Appendix A to 10 CFR 50 and is, therefore, acceptable.

This action closes TAC 51636.
