Docket No.: 50-275 T. M. Novak, Assistant Director for Licensing, MEMORANDUM FOR:
Division of Licensing, NRR FROM:
L. S. Rubenstein, Assistant Director for Core and Plant Systems, Division of Systems Integration, NRR
SUBJECT:
DIABLO CANYON INDEPENDENT DESIGN VERIFICATION PROGRAM (IDVP), PHASE II - STAFF REVIEW AND EVALUATION Within t% past month, DSI has begun its involvement in the Diablo Canyon Unit 1 !]VP Phase II effort. The Auxiliary Systems Branch (ASB) has been-assigneo primary responsibility within DSI since two of the three systems chosen for the program (auxiliary feedwater system and control room venti-lation and pressurization system) are within ASB's primary area of respon-sibility.
The third system (4160 V power system) is within Power Systems Branch's (PSB) primary area of responsibility. ASB and PSB members have reviewed the available interim technical reports and related documents concerning Phase II to date and attended a status meeting and site visit (during the week of January 10,1983) to become more familiar with the issues and progress of the IDVP.
Based on what we_ have seen to date, it has beceme apparent that the depth of the scope of the Phase II review by the IDVP and the number and variety of systems-design issues being covered will necessitate that other branches within NRR be involved in the evaluation of the IDVP results.
Consequently, we believe DL should assure coordination of the staff technical review of Phase II by assuring that all documents are made available to those branches with review responsibility in the applicable areas, assuring that they become familiar with the program's current status, and assuring that they are kept l
informed of its progress. ASB can provide these branches with additional technical background as necessary based on the meeting and site visit. ASB will also continue to provide an integration / technical coordination role within DSI.
