The attached report by our field inspector of a visit to the Combustion i

Engineering plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on August 2-5, 1966, is for-warded for information. The primary purpose of this visit was to obtain information on the final steps in the fabrication of the reactor pressure vessels for the subject facilities.

We plan to follow up on the G-E surveillance test program to determine whether the data provided the inspector by CE were representativa..The data of primary concern were the low yield values for two samples of the weld metal in the main vertical shell course.

For your information, a sununary of the status of other pressure vessels D

in the CE shops follows:

Millstone - Two shell sections completed, welding in progress on a third and forming of the plates completed on the fourth. Welding was also in progress on the pie-shaped sections of the bottom and closure heads.

Indian Point No. 2 - The three main shell courses were assembled. Cladding completed on one. The inspector observed the dye check of the clad. The i

large primary system nozzle forgings were in the shop but installation had not started.

,a Carolina Power & Light - Rework of the old Malibu shell sections was con-

{

tinuing for this contract. Rework consists of machining ID and OD plus T
