DOCKET NO. 50-325 LICENSE NO. DPR-71 SPECIAL REPORT PER TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 3.7.7.1 AND PURSUANT TO TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 6.9.2 (1-SR-90-001)

Gentlemen:

In accordance with Technical Specification 3.7.7.1, Action b.3.and per telecom with Bob Carrol, NRC Region II Administrator, on January 3, 1990, at 1500, this special report is being submitted.

The diesel-driven fire pump was under clearance for performance of yearly maintenance. :After completing a preventative maintenance evolution on a low

' pressure switch for the diesel-driven pump, an Instrumentation and Control F -(160). technician opened the cabinet door to the 4160 volt contactor cabinet

.for the motor-driven fire pump to locate its associated low pressure switch.

4--

The preventative maintenance evolution was scheduled for the motor-driven switch the next day and the technician was verifying-its location. At the time the door was opened, the motor-driven fire pump was operating to support flushing of tho' hydrants and lines. Upon opening the cabinet door, a safety interlock tripped the operating fire pump. . The 150 technician immediately closed the cabinet door. The power supplies to the motor-dr!.ven pump were deenergized at,1106 until it was confirmed that the door was safely secured.

At 1116,.the power supplies were reenergized and the motor-driven fire pump was restored'to operable status. Operations personnel in the area investigated the cause of the trip and informed the Unit 1 Shift Foreman of the event.

Very truly yours, t
