Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

This confirms the conversation between Mr. R. M. Poulk, Jr., Regulatory Specialist, and Mr. R. C. Butcher of your office at 1450 on March 27, 1981, concerning an immediately reportable event.

At 0710 on March 25, 1981, the Unit No. 1 TIP machine "C" was placed under clearance to troubleshoot and repair problems caused by excessive =oisture due to steam leaks in the TIP room. At 1330 on March 26, 1981, while re=oving this clearance, the Senior Reactor Operator involved expressed a concern as to the operability of the automatic ball valve with the TIP machine deenergized. This concern was expressed to his immediate supervisor who instructed I&C to determine the status of this ball valve with the machine deenergized. At 1330 or '! arch 27, 1981, it was deter =ined that the TIP ball isolation valve is inoperable when the TIP machine is deenergized. As the TIP machine was returned to normal service on March 26, 1981, this problem has been corrected.

This event is being reported under Technical Specification 6.9.1.8.F,

6. 9.1. 8. B , 3. 6.1, and 3. 6. 3.

Very truly yours, T poo7 C. R. Dietz, General Manager ,5 Brunswick Steam Electric Plant
