Subject:

Submittal of new Reactor Physics Methods reports and schedule for submitting plant specific reports.

Dear Sir:

Yankee met with the USNRC on August 25, 1987 to discuss our plans to utilize new reactor physics methods for Yankee Nuclear Power Station (YNPS), Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station (VY) and Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station (MY).

At that time, we indicated that we would begin submitting reports on the new methods by early 1988.

The first report, "CASMO-3 Validation and Verification," is enclosed with this letter. CASMO-3 is a lattice physics code used to generate nuclear constants for application in spatial core models. The second report, "SIMULATE-3 Validation and Verification," will be submitted on or before July 1, 1988. SIMULATE-3 is an advanced nodal code used to generate physics data for reload analysis calculations.

Yankee intends to utilize these methods first in Cycle 21 of YNPS, scheduled for a summer 1990 stactup. A YNPS plant specific report will be submitted by December of 1988. We will begin the licensing analysis for Cycle 21 in April of 1989. Therefore, it would be helpful to us if we had some as;essment of the status of the review prior to this date. In addition, we will be submitting a Vermont Yankee plant specific report also by December of 1988. The Maine Yankee plant specific report will be submitted by December of 1989.
