August 28,1998 Docket No. 50-353 License No. NFP-85 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Limerick Generating Station, Unit 2 Response to Request for Additional Information Emergency Core Cooling System Suction Strainer Modification

Dear Sir / Madam:

By letter dated October 6,1997, PECO Energy submitted license amendment requests for Limerick Generating Station (LGS), Units 1 and 2, to facilitate implementation of a plant modification to install new suction strainers on certain Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) pump suction lines. Implementation of this modification is in response to the requested actions identified in Bulletin 96-03," Potential Plugging of Emergency Core Cooling Suction Strainers by Debris in Boiling Water Reactors."

By letter dated December 30,1997, the NRC issued a request for additional information regarding the license amendment requests. The NRC identified two (2) issues, one of which requested copies of the Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) analysis for the Residual Heat Removal (RHR) and Core Spray (CS) pumps reflecting the new ECCS strainer design assumptions. PECO Energy responded to the NRC's request by letter dated February 2,1998.

Copies of the applicable NPSH analyses for the LGS, Units 1 and 2, RHR and CS pumps were included in our response. The RHR and CS pump NPSH analyses are identical for LGS, Units 1 /

and 2. However, at the time of submittal the analyses only pertained to Unit 1, since this was the [/

first of the LGS units to undergo strainer modification work. k Subsequently, by letter dated May 14,1998, the NRC issued Amendment No.128 to Facility Operating License No. NPF 39 for LGS, Unit 1. The Unit 2 license amendment request is still pending NRC approval. In the May 14,1998 letter, the NRC indicated that its evaluation of the license amendment request for LGS, Unit 2, was being deferred pending our response to the --

request for additional information regarding the NPSH analyses for Unit 2.
