GPU Nuclear Corporation Notification of Unusual Event Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Alert Docket No. 50-219 ,_ _ Site Area Emergency Forked River, New Jersey General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

REACTOR TRIP AND SHUTDOWN FOR GREATER THAN 48 HOURS A reactor trip occurred at 0456, 7/30/87, due to a high pressure signal caused by closure of a main steam isolation valve (MSIV). The MSIV closed shortly after the air supply to the valve (NS-04A) was lost due to air leakage which became evident immediately upon initiating the routine MSIV 5 percent closure test. In anticipation of the trip, operators had commenced a load reduction and were able to reduce load from full power to about 70% before the MSIV went fully closed. No relief valves lifted.

Plant response was normal and reactor water level was in control at all times. The shutdown may last three days while repairs to equipment are made. The licensee intends to issue a press release. The State of New Jersey has been informed.
