June 13, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOIIFICATION OF EV,ENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-101 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

INDICATIONS IN FEEDWATER N0ZZLE During liquid penetrant examination of a Feedwater Nozzle, four significant crack indications were identified. The longest was 12 inches long, two were 8 inches long, and the last was 2 inches. Based on information available, the twelve-inch indication is longer than previously seen elsewhere and may involve the base metal. The licensee is in the pro-cess of removing the cladding and will examine the affected areas for possible cracks which may have penetrated the base metal.
Media interest is not expected. The State of New Jersey has been in-formed. A press release is not planned.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received original notification of this occurrence on site at 2:00 p.m., June 10.
