CONTAMINATION IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR (UPDATE)

On September 4,1986, a technician at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station was i

found to be carrying five contaminated one-dollar bills in his wallet. Analysis of the money revealed about 0.8 microcuries of iodine-131 (half-life: 8 days). The Radiation Protection Manager at Oyster Creek, the State of New Jersey, and NRC Region I each dis-

patched personnel to the bank which was the source of the money and surveys were made th3re and at the home of the technician. These and other efforts found no further contamination but failed to detennine how the technician's money became contaminated.

Several local medical licensees have been contacted and no events were reported which could have contaminated the money. On September 9,1986, the Radiation Protection Manager for Oyster Creek informed NRC Region I that the technician, his wife, and his two children rcceived whole body counts on September 4,1986 and that no radioactivity was detected oth2r than naturally occurring potassium-40.

Region I plans no further action regarding this matter.
