Subject:
ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM At about 8:50 a.m. on August 4,1988 an armed guard accidentally discharged a round from i
her handgun while reholstering it af ter cleaning and reloading the weapon.
The incident occurred in a lunch room used by the security force, outside of the protected area.
The l
round lodged in a tool box used to contain the weapon cleaning supplies.
No one else was in the area at the time and no one was injured.
The licensee investigated the incident and confirmed that the discharge was accidental.
The guard is being retrained and.the weapon will be examined by a gunsmith prior to being returned to service.
Additionally, the licensee is reviewing the firearms handling procedures for weaknesses.
Notification was made to the NRC's resident inspector at approximately 9:30 a.m.
The resident is reviewing the licensee's action.
