Docket No. 50-322

Mr. Leslie M. Hill

Shoreham, Resident Manager

Long Island Power Authority

Shoreham Nuclear Power Station

P. O. Box 628. North Country Road

Wading River, New York 11792

Dear Mr. Hill:

SUBJECT: NRC Inspection No. 50-322/92-05

This letter transmits the results of safety inspections conducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz during the

period October 13 - December 31,1992, at the Shoreham Nuc! car Power Station, Wading River,

New York. The inspection findings were discussed with you and members of your staff

periodically during the inspection.

Areas reviewed during the inspection were important +s health and safety and are fully discussed

in the enclosed inspection report. The areas revi.wed included decommissioning status and

activities; action on previous findings; organization, staffing, training and qualifications;

radiological controls; radioactive waste activities; maintenance and surveillance; quality

assurance; fire protection; and security,

The inspection involved independent observations of on-going activities, interviews, and

' document reviews, and results indirated that, overall, decommissioning activities were generally

well managed. The performance of the readiness assessment for termination survey plan

implementation was considered a very good initiative. The inspector did identify areas for

improvement. These areas were lack of load paths for and improper movement of the polar

crane, examples of coor industrial safety practices, and improper sign-off of chedlists. You

promptly addressed the immediate concerns associated with the areas for improvement.
