June 29,1983 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comnission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region V 1450 Maria Lane, suite 210 Walnut Creek, California 94596-5368 Attention: Mr. J. B. Martin, Regional Administrator -

Dear Sir:

Subject:

Docket Nos 50-361 and 50-362 Prompt Reports Licensee Event Report No.83-068 (Docket 50-361)

Licensee Event Report No.83-040 (Docket 50-362)

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 2 & 3 Pursuant to Section 6.9.1.12.i of Appendix A, Technical Specifications to Facility Operating Licenses NPF-10 and NPF-15, for San Onofre Units 2 and 3 respectively, this submittal provides written confirmation of our notification to the NRC on June 28, 1983 of a reportable occurrence associated with the Reactor Cooling System (RCS) hot leg sampling line nozzle loads.

We have been advised by Combustion Engineering Inc., (CE) through Bechtel Power Corporation, that RCS hot leg sampling line nozzle loads have been determined to exceed stress limits considered acceptable by CE. Acceptability relative to ASME code requirements is being evaluated. Two (2) sampling lines on Unit 2 and one (1) sampling line on Unit 3 are affected.

A 14-day follow-up report and copies of Licensee Event Reports l (LER's) will be submitted prior to July 12, 1983 to address this l event including the cause and corrective action taken. l If you have any questions regarding the above, please contact me.

Sincerely, l H13 /17hs 8J07130275 830629 PDR ADOCK 05000361 0 PDR ^
