Dear Mr. Moseley:

My letter of April 12, 1977 provided a response to Item 1 contained in IE Inspection Report 50-269, -270, -287/77-2. The following information is provided to supplement that response.

As stated in the response a detailed analysis on liquid waste j samples will be performed monthly to assure that sensitivity  ;

limits are met for those gamma emitters of low energy and  !

abundance contained in certain mixtures of gamma emitting nuclides. This will be performed until a proposed technical specification amendment is approved by the NRC. Currently, a procedure is being developed for the counting, evaluating, and applying the ratio method to ease the requirements on routine samples. Testing is being accomplished in which three liters of effluent (combined from laundry, condensate monitor, and condensate test tanks) will be ion exchanged with 55 cc i of mixed resin. The resin and eluate will both be counted to determine minimum detectable activity (MDA's) for those radio-nuclides not routinely identified in effluent samples. These MDA's will be ratioed to radionuclides routinely identified. 1 The ratios of routinely identified radionuclides in the (ion exchanged) samples will be compared to similar ratios for several effluent releases to verify uniform applicability of this method. This method will be repeated monthly to t
