CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION Report No.: SD-413/414-80-03 Report Date: March 7, 1980 Facility: Catawba Nuclear Station. Units 1 :nd 2 Identification of Deficiency: Diesel Generator Heat Exchanger Incorrect Segmental Baffling Initial Report:

On February 6, 1980, Mr. Bob McFarland, of NRC Region II, Atlanta, Georgia, was notified of this deficiency by Messrs. J. R. Wells, B. M. Rice and W. J. Foley of Duke Power Company.

Supplier and/or Component: .

The item found to contain the deficiency is a Jacket Water Cooler manu-factured by Thermxchanger, Inc., Oakland, California and was supplied by Transamerica Delaval on their diesel generator units. The manufacturer indicates the deficiency is limited to caly the two diesels already supplied to Catawba Nuclear Station as the baffling is unique to this design.

Description of Deficiency:

During the manufacturing process of Unit 2 heat exchangers by the manu-facturer, a worker questioned the dimensions of the internal baf fling.

It was determined that dimensional error was present on the engineering drawing for the baffles. This dimensional change would cause a reduction of area between baffles and, therefore, would not allow the proper flow rate of jacket water. This deficiency is also described in a report to Mr. George Spencer, United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Walnut Creek, California from Mr. J. D. Hollison of Thermxchanger, Inc.

Analysis of Safety Implications:

The two heat exchangers for Unit 1, which had not been installed, were the only ones involved in this deficiency. The deficiency if left undetected, could have caused inadequate cooling to the diesels, however, the deficiency would have been detected during preoperational testing.

Corrective Action:

The two heat exchangers have been shipped back to the manufacturer for replacement of the baffles. They are scheduled to be returned by May 15, 1980.
