C. 20555 Attention: Ms. E. G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Re: Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414

Dear Mr. Denton:

Your June 9, 1981 letter to W. S. Lee requested quarterly updates of the pro-jected construction completion date for Catawba Unit 1. The following provides information for our fourth quarterly update. Erection status of various commod-ities for the March, April, and May accounting periods are included.

Catawba Unit 1 is estimated to be 89 percent complete as of April 25, 1982. This completion figure is based on the installation of key commodities such as piping, support / restraints, cables, concrete, and instrumentation. The estimate of remaining work now includes an end of job projection based on projected scope growth of these commodities.

The high velocity flush and chemical cleaning of the condenser and associated systems has been completed. Hydrostatic testing of the Chemical and Volume Control System (NV), the Ice Condenser Refrigeration System (NF), and the Nuclear Service Water System (RN) is underway. The Upper Head Injection System (UHI) hydrostatic testing is complete. Hydrostatic testing of the Component Cooling System (KC) will begin in June.

Our total Construction work force decreased from 3720 on March 14, 1982 to 3516 on June 20, 1982. Second shift work and overtime is used where necessary to complete work on critical systems.

The following quantities of listed Unit 1 commodities were erected during the March, April, and May accounting periods (12 weeks). The " Quantity Remaining to Be Erected" column now includes end of job estimates projected as part of our reassessment of the Unit 1 schedule.

Quantity Erected Quantity Remaining Commodities During Period to Be Erected Structural Concrete (cy) 2342 540 13,600 Piping (weighted value)

Cable Pulls (each) 1969 212 1726 3,707 12,617 pO /

Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director June 30, 1982 Page 2 My letter of May 10, 1982 indicated that the Catawba Unit 1 Fuel Load Date had been rescheduled to October 1984. Additional milestone dates are as follow:
