Subject:
Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 Supplemental liesponse to NRC Generic Letter 89-13, Service Water System Prob'. ems Af fecting Safety-Related Equipment i
By letter dated July 18, 1989, the NRC staff requested holders of operating l
licenses to supply information about their respective service water systems to assure the NRC of compliance with the requirements referenced in Generic Letter 89-13, and to confirm that the safety functions of their respective service water systems are being met.
By letter dated January 26, 1990, we provided our initial response to the Generic Letter.
Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses to provide r
the NRC confirmation that the required single failure review had been completed. This review has been completed for Catawba as of July 16, 1990.
4 Action I of Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses to complete initial activities in the development and. implementation of an intake structure inspection program, and blocido addition program prior to start-up following the first refueling outage beginning nine months or more after the date of the letter, and provide NRC confirmation of such completion. The intake structure inspection program has been developed.
Procedures for inspection have been implemented and the intake structures have been sampled and analyzed. We have determined that the Standby Nuclear Service Water Pond intake structure requires cleaning and based on the
^
analysir, we plan to clean it prior to August 1991.
Action I of Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses to complete initial activities in the development and implementation of a blocide addition program, and to provide confirmation of completion. Our program at Catawba has been developed. We have obtained the required i
discharge permits and have the blocide on site. However, we cannot i
impicment the program until the completion of modifications that resulted l
from the discharge permit requirements. A modification to reroute automatic i-strainer backwash discharge piping to a pathway that will comply with the discharge permit is currently being designed and planned.
Following completion and testing of this modification, we will begin our biocide addition program, and an evaluation of this pilot program.

September 12, 1990 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Supplemental Response to NRC Generic Letter 89-13 Page 2 In our response dated January 26, 1990 to Generic Letter 89-13 Action II, we referenced a Service Water Program Manual that would be used to document our service water program. This manual will not be completed by the requested implementation date; however, it is under development and will be completed on or about March 14, 1991.
With the submittal of this letter, in addition to our response of January 26, 1990, all actions required by Generic Letter 89-13 for Catawba Nuc1 car Station have been addressed to the staff.
