PRAIRIE ISIAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Dockets No. 50-282 and No. 50-306 In response to IE Bulletin 79-19, the following is of fered:

material. Procedures will be revised to emphasize controls on the chemical and physical form of the low-level radioactive material and on the containment integrity of the packaging. Special measures in the above area will be taket y prior to the next shipment of radioactive waste.

Mr. James G. Keppler Septewber 21, 1979 Page 2 material. These personnel are trained and retrained in the above requirements and our operating procedures and instructions concerning radioactive material shipments. Records of this training are maintained.

Item 6 Operations personnel are trained to assure that radioactive waste is processed to proper chemical and physical form for shipment to a low-level waste burial facility. Keeping waste to a minimum is a common practice for all plant personnel. In order to emphasize this to all personnel, minimis ing of wastes generated will be addressed in the next revision of the General Employee Training Program and will be part of annual retraining sessions.

A retraining program for operations personnel will be developed for the waste solidification systems within six months.

Item 7 Radioactive material handling and shipping are activities identified in plant Administrative Control Directives. All activities in the Administrative Control Directives are under the plant Quality Engineer Program of auditing.

This area of concern has been identified to the Quality Assurance personnel.

Item 8 A management-controlled audit of activities associated with the transfer, packaging, and transport of low-level radioactive waste was performed at Prairie Island on September 12, 1979.

Item 9 - Quest 1 Prairie Island dota generate liquid low-level radioactive waste which is solidified using a cement agent system.
