Introduction:

This report is submitted to advise of the interim status and course of cction required pursuant to MCAR #20 and NCR,1185. -

All investigation completed at present has been based on the information from one of the nine cracked welds, which has been ground out. This report cannot be finalized until the gap information is available for all the cracked welds. The final report is rescheduled for June 15, 1978, for resolution of this problem. "

Deficiency The deficient welds have been discussed in Interim Report #1," dated~

February 17, 1978.

Safety Implications The safety implications have been discussed in Interim Report #2, dated March 31, 1978.

Corrective Action The documentation' package for the weld and weld test procedures used for the subject welds was received from W. J. Woolicy Company on April 26, 1978, and is currently under review. .

A revised weld repair procedure for the cracked fillet welds, climinating the requirements for post-weld heat treatment, was received from W. J.

Voolley Campany on April 20, 1978. Based on information presently availabla, the revised weld repair procedure has been reviewed and found cceeptable by Project Engineering. The letter forwarding this procedure includes W. J. Woolley Company's concurrence to grinding out the remaining 8 out of 9 total cracked welds.

Bechtel Construction is grinding out the remaining cracked welds and mapping the gap between the stiffener and the veld ring. A determination cs to the cause of the cracked fillet welds will be completed when the f grp information for all the cracked welds has been evaluated.

Dear Mr. Bird:

This is to inform you of the progress of MCAR-20 since Interim Report f 3, dated May 1, 1978. All eight of the cracked welds have been ground out and their gaps have been mapped. Magnetic particle inspection was performed on the velds between the horizont'l rtiffeners and the veld ring, and none were found to be cracted. One of the horizontal stiffener velds which had been reported as cracked was found to be a cound weld when magnetic particle tested. On May 11, 1978, a letter was transmitted to W. J. Hoolley Co.

requesting the details of the splice plates at the two locations where the gap between the stiffener and the weld ring exceeds 3/8 inch.

C As scheduled, the final report for resolution of the problem is June 15, 1978.

Sincerely,

  • l! ilE J. M. Klacking V [
