MIDLAND ENERGY CENTER PROJECT DOCKET NOS 50-329 AND 50-330 TRANSAMERICA DELAVAL DIESEL GENERATORS, FOOT VALVE FILE:

0.4.9.115 SERIAL:

32647 On March 21, 1986 Consumers Power Company (CPCo) verbally notified your staff k

of a potentially reportable condition conc.erning stand by diesel generators.

In accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e), the following interim report is being submitted.

Description of Concern A copy of a Part 21 Notice was received by CPCo from Transamerica Delaval, Incorporated. Transamerica Delaval is the supplier of four standby diesel generators. This report describes a potential problem with an elastomer liner in the foot valve nounted in the lube oil surp tank. The foot valve is manufactured by the Clear Flow Company located in Berkeley, California. The disintegration of the liner could cause a restriction in the valve preventing flow of oil to the on-engine lube oil pump, or the liner pieces could flow rpstream, lodging in and dan.iging the on-engine lube oil pump.

Either failure will cause a loss of lube oil to the engine effecting availability.

Safety Impact The safety impact of this condition is indeterminate.

Root Caune No root cause has been determined for this condition.
