l On April 1, 1985 Consumers Power Company (CPCo) notified your staff of a l
reportable condition concerning the' starting air check valve.
In accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e) CPCo is making this interim report.

CPCo. received a Part 21 Report from Transamerica Delaval dated March 12, 1985 l
aa..I follow-up reports dated March 14, 1985 and April 4, 1985. Transamerica i'
Delaval is the supplier of four standby diesel generators. The reports lj indicate that during operational testing of an engine at Grand Gulf, flames were noticed coming out of a flexible coupling on the air start header assembly.
Examination disclosed that a piece broke off one of the four check valves in the on-engine mounted starting air piping. The other three valves were visually checked and one of these was cracked. This potential problem with the check valve in the on-engine mounted starting air piping could result in i
engine non-availability.
