REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT FOR REACTOR VESSEL PACKAGE

Dear Mr. Quennoz:

This refers to your request for a Certificate of Compliance for the one-time shipment of the Trojan Reactor Vessel Package dated March 31,1997. We have determined that we need additional information or clarification to complete our review of the safety analysis report attached to your March 31,1997 submittal. Please provide responses to the enclosed Request for Additional Information within 30 dayr, of the date of this letter. This is the first request for additional information pertaining to your submittal and deals only with the issue of waste classification. ,

in accordance with 10 CFR 50.30(b), your response to the enclosed Request for Additional Information must be executed in a signed original under oath or affirmation. ,

This requirement affects nine or fewer respondents and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under P.L.96-511.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TROJAN CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE APPLICATION SHIPMENT OF THE REACTOR VESSEL PACKAGE

1. Provide the basis for the statement that the reactor vesselinternals comprise 340 cubic feet of Greater Than Class C Waste. This statement criginally appeared in your submittal dated January 30,1997 entitled " Reactor Vessel and Internals Removal Plan". Specifically, identify the internals in the reactor vessel, the displaced volumes of each internal component, the radionuclide activities for each component, and describe how the radionuclide activities were calculated.
2. Provide the methodology and results of the waste classification for the pressure vessel with the internals intact. Describe how the waste classification conforms to the recommendations in Section 3.3 of the Branch Technical Position on Concentration Averaging and Encapsulation (BTP), datad January 17,1995. Demonstrate that the waste classification considered each of the internal components as a separate entity in the averaging.
