SUBJECT: MODULAR SPENT FUEL POOL COOLING SYSTEM
Dear Mr. Quennoz:
On July 1,1998, the NRC issued NRC Inspection Report 50-344/98-02 concerning your Trojan
Nuclear Plant. The inspection report requested that you provide written confirmation to the
NRC of the completion of adequate acceptance and testing of the new modular spent fuel pool
cooling system.
We.have reviewed the information previded in your letter dated August 13,1998, concerning
the new spent fuel pool system. In addition, inspection 50-344/98-03 completed July 30,1998,
and Inspection 50-344/98-202 completed September 3,1998, included reviews of the system
design and testing. Based on your letter and the information collecteo during these two
inspections, we are satisfied that adequate acceptance and testing has been conducted, and
provisions made for maintaining operability of the new Modular Spent Fuel Pool Cooling and
'
Cleanup System. We appreciate your responsiveness to our request for management
assurance that the new system has been thoroughly evaluated and tested to ensure it will
perform the intended function of maintaining an adequate level of spent fuel pool cooling.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter will be
placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
