Dear Mr. Chisolm:
SUBJECT:
Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 File: 0260/15330 Sulfuric Acid Spill Supplemental Report No. 1 APO-87/ 0639 l
On March 23, 1986 a spill involving sulfuric acid was detected at i Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) in an area adj eent to and under the northwest side of the Water Treatment Building. A letter was submitted to the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources, dated April 18, 1986 (AP0-86/0468) describing this spill incident.
The acid spill monitoring and recovery activities conducted since April 1986 are outlined below:
- On April 1, 1986 0 & H Materials, under the direction of Bechtel Engineering and System Energy Resources, Inc. (formerly .
Mississippi Power & Light Co.), drilled a series of injection, !
observation and extraction wells surrounding the acid spill area.
These wells were established to attempt possible neutralization of the acid, to determine pH and water level elevation and to remove the acidic water.
- Approximately 250,000 gallons of acid / water mixture was removed in 1986 dewatering operations, of which approximately 6000 gallons !
was calculated to be 98% sulfuric acid. No dewatering has been necessary in 1987 due to stability of the acid-affected area.
- The pH and elevation monitoring frequency was gradually reduced from hourly to biweekly over a period of several months, starting in October 1986, based on stabilization of the acid-affected area ;
and no significant changes observed in measured data.
- -0n January 5,1987 Radiological & Environmental Services (R&ES) personnel assumed monitoring responsibilities previously conducted .
by Plant Staff and contractor personnel. Thirteen monitoring wells !
(see Attachment I), eight of which are dewatering wells, located R around the acid-affected area are monitored biweekly for pH and water level elevation to verify that the acid has stabilized in PENV ACID SUPPLEMENTAL 123N l ^2 " ' " 3 " I I

the monitoring wells from January 8, 1987 to June 29, 1987 ranged 1
.from 5.03 to 9.78. During this same' time period,'there were two !
low-pH wells, P-21 and P-22, in which the pH ranged from 2.30 to l 3.34 and 3.01 to 7.69, respectively. [When a report was made to- I the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (AECM-87/0063) based on February 1987 data, monitoring well P-22 did.not appear to qualify as a low-pH well. However, further data collection indicated that this ,.
well should be' included as'the second low pH well.] A monthly pH 1 range for each monitoring'well is provided in Attachment II.
- R&ES personnel will notify Nu:: lear Plant Engineering to evaluate the necessity to begin the dewatering process or take other 'i corrective actions if any well consistently displays a pH.less ,
than 5, with the exception of P-21 and P-22 (the two. wells-around :
which the acid appears to be located). 1
- Although monitoring frequency may be later reduced, R&ES intends [
to continue the pH and water level monitoring until the acid has ?
been removed by dilution, neutralized or GGNS-is decommissioned, ;
whichever comes first. No environmental impact has been observed or is anticipated outside of the acid-affected~ area.
If yea have any questions, please contact Ms. R. R. Jackson, Supervisor, Environmental Services at (601) 949-9217.
