Letter, S H Howell to J G Keppler; Midland Nuclear Plant; Unit No 1, Docket no 50-329; Unit no 2, Docket no 50-330; Pressurizer Heater System, Howe h-79; dated January 5,1979 The referenced letter vas an interim 50 55(e) report as is this letter.

. A decision has been made not to pursue further a complete engineering evaluation to define the plant response to pressurizer heater unavaila-bility during plant hot shutdown. This evaluation was option 1 from the referenced letter. The condition of pressurizer heater unavailability will be precluded by upgrading to Class lE the pressurizer control and power supply for heater banks 5 and 6 in each pressurizer and by demon-strating the operability of heater banks 5 and 6 following a Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) .

FSAR (Revision 18) Sections 71, 7.4 and 7 5 provide the design bases for the Class lE upgrade described above. Sections 1 7, 3 0, 5 0 and 8 3 uill require further revisions to reflect actual design. It is
