POSSIBLE HIGH EXPOSURE FROM HOT PARTICLE On February 4, 1988, at 11:56 A.M., PST, the licensee reported to the HQ Duty Officer that an individual may have received an exposure of 458 rem to the back of his'left knee from a small particle of C0-60 estimated to be about 43 pCi. The individual had been welding on a decay heat removal pump early in the morning and the particle was detected at about 6:30 A.M. when he was exiting the radiologically controlled area.

Th3 458 rem dose is the licensee's preliminary conservative calculation of what the dose to a small area could have been. The licensee is currently invsstigating the matter and will keep Region V informed of their results.

A localized beta dose of 458 rem to the skin of the leg is not expected to cause any serious health effects.
