BANNING OF COMMONWEALTH EDIS0N QUAD CITIES CORD 0VA, ILLIN0IS (NRC LICENSEE)

FOR RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE ~ SHIPMENTS The Region V office was notified by the State Inspector on site that a shipment of LSA waste received on June 22, 1982 from the Commonwealth Edison Quad Cities in Cordova, Illinois contained a drum (No.11) which had a 1 to li inch hole in the lid of the drum. The shipment consisted of 21 drums containing spent resin solidified in concrete. A contamination check indicated no loose radioactive contamination. Based upon the identified item of noncompliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, the State of Washington banned Commonwealth Edison Quad Cities Power Station from the use of the burial site and suspended their burial permit effective 10:00 am (PDT)

June 22, 1982. The hole in the lid of the drum has been closed and the drum has been placed in the burial trench for disposal. The NRC Region V office notified the NRC Resident Inspectors at the Commonwealth Edison Quad Cities Power Station at 2:30 pm (PDT) on June 23, 1982.

There has been no media interest.

The Region V office was notified of the action taken by the State of Washington Resident Inspector at 12:35 pm on June 23, 1982.
