Subject:
PIPE BREAK AT 6 INCH FEEDWATER VALVE The Commonwealth Edison Company notified the Chicago Regional Office of Inspection and Enforcement on August 17, 1975, at 9:45 p.m. that a pipe break occurred on the down stream side of the 6 inch feedwater flow control valve in the turbine building.
The break occurred due to a feedwater flow transient while' the plant
- j
-was operating at approximately 160 MWe during a plant startup. The unit was immediately scrammed and ti;e affected section was isolated promptly.
The licensee estimates that approximately 5000 gallons of water were released from the system. Some of the water leaked from the turbine building through a closed door, but none of the water left the site boundaries.
This is the second pipe break that has occurred in this location. The first break occurred on June 10, 1974, and was traced to the wall thickness being less than design due to valve rework.
Inspectors from the Chicago Regional Office have been dispatched to the site.
OIE received notification of the occurrence by telephone from N. Kalivianakis, the station surerinten.ent at 9:45 p.m. on August 17, 1975.
