P.ISUMPTION OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE SHIPMENTS TO SOUTH CAROLINA Pursuant to an order from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control dnced November 9, 1979, inspectors from Region III (Chicago) conducted an inspection of radioactive vaste packaging and shipping activities at the Quad Cities Nuclear Sta' tion November 13-15, 1979.
The inspection included a review of the licensee's impicmentation of procedural modifications instituted in response to issues raised by the South Camlina Department of Health and Environnental Control in an Order dated October 12, 1979.
The October 12, 1979 Order prohibitod further shipment of radioactive waste to the State of South Carolina by Comm'onwealth Edison Company until certain corrective actions concerning packaging of the waste materials were completed.
The first two ship =ents to depart Quad Cities following rescission of the shipping ban were reviewed by the Ragion III inspectors for conformance to the licensee's procedures.
The shipments ars axpected to arrive at the Barnwell, South Carolina burini site on Novcmber 16, 1979.
Region III inspectors vill perform similar inspections at the Zion and Dresden Nuclear Stations lercre resu=ption of radioactive vaste shipments from those statione.
The State of South Carolina was inforn.ed at the completion of the Quad Cities inspection and will similarly be informed upon completion of the inspections at the Zion and Dresden Nucicar Stations.
No press release is planned.
The matter has received considerable local inedia coverage including interviews of tha resident inspector.
