The information is as initially received without v:rification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

PERMANENT SHUTDOWN OF THE LACROSSE BOILING WATER REACTOR The Region III (Chicago) Office was informed by Dairyland Power Cooperative today that on April 24 the Dairyland Board had authorized the permanent shutdown of the Lacrosse Boiling Water R: actor (LACBWR) due to economic reasons. The plant will be put in the cold shutdown mode within the next two weeks, the fuel removed from the reactor and placed in the storage pool under existing storage conditions, and the facility put in a " safe store" mode.

No immediate organizational changes will be made but the plant staff will be reduced with tha discontinuation of various plant operations.

Tha licensee plans to make a public announcement at 3:30 p.m. (CDT) today.

LACBWR started commercial operations November 1, 1969 as an Atomic Energy Commission demonstration facility and was later turned over to Dairyland Power Cooperative for commercial use.

The State of Wisconsin will be notified.

R:gion III learned of the planned shutdown at approximately 8:30 a.m. on April 27, 1987.
