Subject:

UPDATE PN0 - ALC0HOL BOTTLE FOUND IN CONTROL ROOM The licensee notified the Senior Resident Inspector that at 7:15 p.m. on April 14, 1987 two I&C engineers found a half pint peach brandy bottle inside a control room panel. The !&C engineers were performing an inventory of agastat relays inside an.

electrical distribution panel. This panel is directly behind the control room shift supervisor's desk. The bottle was lying on its side on the top of two meters near the upper interior portion of this centrol room panel. The bottle was very dusty and dark brown in color, and combined with its location made it difficult to observe. The '

bottle's Maryland state liquor seal was broken, and it was about half full.

), The licensee initially determined this event not to be reportable; however, the senior rosident inspector was notified at home. Further licensee investigation determined the following: the bottle contained 29*4 by volume alcohol (original contents 59%);

the bottle was manufactured in 1970 and was filled with brandy in 1976; a label and tax seal on the bottle indicates the bottle was purchased before 1979 (Unit 2 was licensed in 1973 and Unit 3 in 1974). With this additional information, the licensee cade a one hour safeguards event report on May 2, 1988. The residents are continuing to follow the licensee's investigation.

The licensee and NRC Region I will respond to media inquiries.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and State of Maryland have been informed.
